Did you know that the biggest killers in America are the diseases of the cardiovascular system. These are diseases such as heart disease and stroke. The common causes of these diseases and other chronic conditions such as high blood pressure are affected by the health of our blood vessels.
The blood vessels and arteries of the body play a very important role in bringing blood to the major organs of the body including the heart and the brain. The blood contains the necessary oxygen and essential nutrients that the heart and brain needs to function. When the blood flow is slowed down or blocked to the heart a heart attack will happen. When the blood flow is constricted or stopped while going to the brain then, a stroke will occur.
Medical research has revealed 2 common causes of what increases our risk of vascular diseases and conditions such as heart disease, stroke or high blood pressure. These are discussed below:
Heredity factors
These are things that we cannot control. Certain people have a greater risk of getting these diseases and conditions than others. For example, due to genetics certain people will have higher cholesterol that will have to be treated by medication. There are also racial genetic factors involved. Research has found that blacks or more susceptible to getting high blood pressure than whites.
External factors
The environment that we live in has also a huge influence on increasing our risk of cardiovascular diseases and conditions. There are many external factors that can increase are risk. For example, if you are a heavy smoker then you will increase your risk of getting coronary heart disease and stroke. Other factors can include eating a diet that is high in saturated fats and sugar.
These types of foods eaten consistently can line the arteries and therefore, increase the risk of a heart attack. Another important factor is a lack of exercise. If we do not burn the fat off then it will collect in our blood vessels and arteries and increasing the risk of blockages. Also, a lack of exercises weakens the strength of the heart which increases the risk of cardiovascular problems.
